The pool is featured in Where Have All the Monsters Gone? It is the source of the Monsters existence and the source of monster existence that is made of the very substance of fears. The pool takes the form of a lava like substance that is essential to the existence of Monsters and is replenished by the fear of humans. By scaring humans, Monsters keep the Pool from depleting. If the Pool were to vanish, so would the Monsters. Both The Gromble and Ickis are shown to be able to communicate with the pool. The voice of the pool also claimed to be the soul of Ickis' ancestor, though this may have been a generalization as it is the source of existence for all monsters.
